A picture from today's zode dive. We got 3 Sheephead... a 24 inch (about 10 lbs), a 27 inch (12 lbs) and a 15 inch...

The 15 inch sheephead must have been a member of the Sheephead Secret Service... He moved in front of the first spear meant for the 27 inch sheephead...

Not in the picture were several good sized sandbass.

A Dept. of Fish and Game Fish Survey member was on the dock when we arrived and weighed and measured all our fish. So we ended up with some pretty accurate measurements...

Vis on the first dive (where we got the sheephead) was around 6 to 10 feet. Vis on the second dive was pushing 30 feet. We found more and bigger sheephead on the second dive. But we had agreed on just 1 hour per dive. And there wasn't enough time left in the dive, after we found them, to wait for one to get close enough...

I'm not sure... I was wrestling the sheephead out of the zode when she measured the sandbass. On any other dive we probably would have been much more impressed with the sandbass. But they weren't nearly as large as the big sheephead. I believe the smallest sandbass seemed to be an inch or two larger than the Secret Service Sheephead. I would guess they were in the 16 to 20 inch range.

On the second dive, I saw what might have been the largest sandbass I've ever seen. But I only saw it once, on the other end of an almost big enough to swim through, tunnel. It was very skitish. And the tunnel was far to long for the range of my speargun. I believe Noc saw it also, but I didn't see it again.

The second dive had some very impressive rock structure, 30' vis, lots of double ended caves, long chasms, monster fish, and small healthy kelp stands. At one point, I found myself in the center of a decent sized school of meduim sized barracuda (and they didn't take off as soon as I saw them). If it wasn't for our 1 hour dive time limit... I would have stayed under for couple of hours or more.

Got back to harbor around 2:30. All done with cleanup and home by around 4:00. Though we did take our time.

Tim,

Them are some good size animals.. Let me ask you this, do you kill anything in sight. How about the eating of a free meal. Do you eat any of it. Or you kill for the glory of it ? (just curious)

Mako is so good! Congrats on the kill. I think I would have just crapped my pants if that Mako came at me, large or small...

I don't recall what type of truck it is... The Zode is off to our left, in the shade. We originally attempted to take the pictures in front of the Zode, but it was a bit to shady. So we moved across the aisle, in front of the truck.
